Chevrolet engine # 454 was part of the Generation II engine line. It is a big block engine configuration with a variety of applications. Dual-plane placement of the valves characterizes this special power plant. It delivers consistent and reliable power and torque every time.

Also used in trucks. Production stopped in 1976. It was also referred to as the RAT MOTOR. It is durable and versatile, ideally suited for Marine application and boat engines. Slightly heavier than its predecessor , but is known and trusted for its strong engine block. According to online sourcing the 71-88 Chevy 454 boat engine application lends itself well to a variety of contexts and specialist requirements. Here are some of the technical specification and details on the

Chevy engine # 454 characteristics:

* It is a big-block engine application that was built upon starting in 1970

* It was expanded to 454 in? (7.4 L) with a 4.251 in (108 mm) bore and 4 in (102 mm) stroke.

Iterations included:

* The 1970 Corvette LS5 engine for example easily produced 390 hp (291 kW) and 500 ft·lbf (678 N·m).

* The one-off LS7 performance-tuned for specialist applications, delivering both power and performance at 465 hp (347 kW) and "just" 490 ft·lbf (664 N·m).

* Also known as the king of muscle car engines, the LS6 454. (NOTE: This engine produced 450 hp (336 kW), but replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with headers could bring it up to 500 hp (373 kW).)

This popular Chevy 454 engine has an interesting development path, that included the power beginning to fall slightly off after 1970 and some related modifactions:

* 1971 - LS5 producing 365 hp (272 kW) and 465 ft·lbf (630 N·m),

* the new LS6 option coming in at 425 hp (317 kW) and 475 ft·lbf (644 N·m).

* Only the LS5 remained in 1972, now at just 270 hp (201 kW) and 390 ft·lbf (529 N·m).

* The 1973 LS4 was at 275 hp (205 kW) and 390 ft·lbf (529 N·m), with 5 hp (4 kW) and 10 ft·lbf (14 N·m) gone the next year.

* 1974 was the last year of the 454 in the Corvette.

* GM continued to use the 7.4 L 454 in their truck line, introducing a new Vortec 7400 version in 1996.

* 1970-1974 Chevrolet Corvette is a popular application

* NOTE: A substantially-modified version of the 454 is sold today as the Vortec 8100.
